Building an Effective Learning Environment

The clinical environment is most effective when there is respect and a trusting relationship between preceptors and students.  Preceptors should demonstrate an open, nonjudgmental, and professional demeanor. This type of clinical environment will lead to a more successful practicum experience. Take some time to evaluate your clinical site capabilities to provide a quality experience for students. Below are a few important areas to assess in your practice:

  • Evaluate space availability for students to review charts, document, and conference as needed
  • Determine if your site population and activities align with the course objectives
  • Consider the amount of time you are able to devote to a student
  • Reflect on your own clinical strengths and those of colleagues at your site
